Founder of Islamic Relief Worldwide, the largest Muslim non-governmental organization for relief and development in the West, was founded in 1984 in the city of Birmingham, United Kingdom. Since leaving Islamic Relief in 2008, Dr. Elbanna established the Humanitarian Forum and Muslim Charities Forum. Both organizations seek to foster closer partnerships and cooperation between humanitarian and charitable organizations with Muslim countries and their Western counterparts.
Dr. Elbanna's achievements have resulted in numerous international awards, including: The British Empire Medal from Queen Elizabeth II in 2004; In the same year, Dr. Al-Banna received the Ibn Khaldun International Award for Excellence in Promoting Intercultural and Interfaith Understanding (UK). In 2004, the Egyptian Medical Syndicate awarded him an honorary shield for his services to humanity and medicine. In February 2020 he received the “Ubuntu Award” for Social Responsibility from the Republic of South Africa.
