The 2020 Call, focused on digital solutions, is running until the 20th of July. Candidates can apply on the website www.openaccelerator.it

Open Accelerator is looking for innovative, high-tech projects and startups leveraging digital technologies to improve patients’ lives.

The best proposals will take part in the acceleration program with the possibility of receiving a seed investment of up to € 100,000 per project.

The 2020 Call for Solutions

The 2020 Call for Solutions is preferably targeted at the therapeutic areas of the Central Nervous System and Respiratory, with a particular focus on the 4 technological macro areas: Digital Prevention, Monitoring and Therapeutics; Digital Diagnostics; Virtual Health; Clinical Trials Digitalization.

This year, in an attempt to transform the COVID-19 emergency into a growth opportunity for the healthcare system, ZCube is also presenting the Special Challenge concerning new ways of interaction among healthcare professionals, Industry and the community.

Open Accelerator is continuing with conviction into its fourth edition, reaffirming its commitment to supporting young startups, helping  to transform promising projects into concrete solutions for patients – comments Elena Zambon, President of Zambon Spa and creator of the accelerator programme – “Digital solutions have never been such a vital support for patients and caregivers as they have at this time. We have direct experience of this through ParkinsonCare, our telenursing service with a human touch. That is why we have decided to dedicate the 2020 Call to digital initiatives. We are convinced that they will be increasingly important in tackling the challenges that lie ahead in terms of health and the system’s sustainability. This programme is yet another way in which we are pursuing with conviction our commitment to improving patients’ lives, integrating cure and care with a multidisciplinary approach.

After the closure of the Call, on the 20th of July, the Open Accelerator team in collaboration with a panel of experts will select the startups which between October and November will participate in the intensive 4-week acceleration programme, consisting of tailored online and onsite sessions held in the OpenZone scientific campus just outside Milan.

The Open Accelerator programme

By taking part in the Open Accelerator programme, the startups will have access to a vast international network of entrepreneurs, scientists, investors, Venture capitalists and Life Sciences professionals. At the end of the programme the most promising projects will be awarded a seed investment of up to € 100,000. Finally, any possible synergies with the companies of the Zambon Group will be assessed.

Open Accelerator 2020 Call is one of a kind both- for its focus on digital health technologies and for its pragmatic approach, strongly focused on identifying concrete proposals for delivering solutions to healthcare needs – says Fabrizio Conicella, General Manager and Board Member of OpenZone and Zcube – It is only through the active engagement of existing and prospective partnerships that we will be able to maximize the potential of the proposals we receive and select with a clear objective: to offer to the market innovative solutions that currently don’t exist.

Ferrer4Future: a new digital health collaboration program https://www.digitalhealthglobal.com/ferrer4future-a-new-digital-health-collaboration-program/ Fri, 29 Nov 2019 10:39:00 +0000 https://www.digitalhealthglobal.com/?p=3478 Ferrer launches Ferrer4Future, a collaborative initiative between start-ups and corporate to leverage digital health as a means to build healthier and more sustainable societies.

Ferrer is a global medium-sized pharmaceutical company headquartered out of Barcelona with a presence in over 110 countries.

The vision is to enable more personalized, effective and responsive care to patients through a connected ecosystem facilitated by digital technologies.

Gemma Estrada, Director of Digital Health in Ferrer comments: We understand that in order to generate and implement patient-driven solutions using digital technologies successfully and sustainably, we need to balance the knowledge and experience of pharma companies with the creativity and agility of start-ups.

Ferrer4Future is all about that!

What is Ferrer4Future program?

Ferrer’s program is bespoke to each individual start-up collaboration which means that it is flexible in time and form. There are no pre-set training dates in batches that all startups have to engage in, there are not CVC like investments preceded by heavy due diligence, there are not a large number of start-ups competing for attention, support, and resources… Instead, Ferrer looks at conducting short term pilots, licenses the technology for markets that are out of the start-up’s reach, or co-create a new market or a new business model…
Ferrer does not expect the start-up to give equity. The agreement is that Ferrer will put in place the mechanisms to advance the solution proposed by the start-up and this will be formalized in an agreement in exchange for commercial rights in certain territories.
Start-ups who join our program may leverage Ferrer’s knowledge, reach our expertise in specific therapeutic areas, geographies or business networks.

Through Ferrer4Future program, start-ups are invited to respond to 3 meaningful challenges:

  • Enhance care for chronic patients (ie. Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension)
  • Improve patient engagement and adherence (ie. in the field of cardio-metabolism)
  • Reduce Chronic Pain.

The first batch of challenges were launched at the beginning of October and the application period will remain open until the 20th of December 2019 at noon. Nevertheless, there will be an on-going screening of the applications in order to guarantee swift feedback to the participating start-ups.

If the solution proposed by the start-up is a “match” with Ferrer’s interests, Ferrer will either partner with the start-up right away or enroll the start-up in the mentoring program, depending on the maturity of the solution proposed.

The program offered is not only bespoke but also personalized for each startup. The duration is flexible between 6 & 18 months during which access is guaranteed to Ferrer mentors, to experts from the various business units, and to internal resources for piloting and developing the solution further.

  • The company is launching a call for innovation for early-stage start-ups focused on developing digital health services and solutions to tackle some of the present and future dermatological challenges

  • The five selected projects will be invited to a nine-month acceleration program at the Barcelona Health Hub headquarters and up to a €50k grant, as well as expert mentorship from Almirall

Almirall, S.A. (ALM) has launched its first call for innovation to start-ups focused on dermatology digital health. This initiative is the first step in the creation of an accelerator programme called the Digital Garden, powered by Almirall and strengthens the company’s commitment to digital innovation based on developing services and solutions to tackle some of the present and future dermatological challenges. The call has been presented during the first Barcelona Health Hub (BHH) Summit, sponsored by Almirall, which has taken place at BHH’s headquarters, located in Barcelona, Spain.

The Digital Garden will begin its journey supporting up to five start-ups chosen after a selection process that will end on November 14th at Almirall’s event in Berlin at Frontiers Health 2019, a leading global event on digital health innovation of which Almirall is a sponsor.

Francesca Wuttke, Chief Digital Officer of Almirall, explained the importance of this project

I am so pleased and excited to announce the launch of the Digital Garden powered by Almirall, and to do so at the BHH Summit. In fact, the five start-ups selected during Frontiers of Health will have access to a nine-month acceleration program based in the BHH headquarters, among other important benefits.

Digital Garden’s selection process

Interested start-ups can apply at almiralldigitalgarden.com, where they will also find the program’s inclusion criteria and offerings. Following a review of the applicants, Almirall will make a shortlist of 10 companies that will be invited to Frontiers Health 2019 to pitch their business models at an Almirall sponsored event that will take place on Thursday 14th of November. The five winning project teams will begin a nine-month acceleration program in January at the BHH headquarters, with the goal of graduating them into venture capital funding. The program will include introductions to investors as well as an investor day.

In addition to the acceleration program, the five chosen start-ups will receive a number of key incentives, including up to a €50K grant that is determined based on a bespoke gap analysis of the start-up and achievement of certain milestones. In addition, they will receive mentoring from top pharma industry experts from all specialties and program stages; and will have the opportunity to leverage leading hospitals in Barcelona as a test bed for digital pilots, with potential access to HCPs and patients; the potential to collaborate on actual Almirall projects; and have access to Almirall’s communication and PR networks to promote their projects, among others.

“Embracing technologies to better access data to empower patients”

Francesca Wuttke is one of the four BHH Ambassadors, highly renowned professionals in digital health that are dedicated and aligned with the goals of the Barcelona Health Hub. They are collaborating to increase awareness in digital health and in a global recognition of the BHH. During the BHH Summit 2019, she moderated one of the panels entitled “Embracing technology to better access data to empower patients”. CEOs from three of the start-ups that are sharing BHH co-working space have discussed growing trends in the pharmaceutical industry.
Increasingly, pharma companies are collaborating with start-ups to improve the strength of their data and bring efficiencies with regard to time and cost. The panellists have also shared their views about the potential of new technologies in the era of Real World Data and Real World Evidence, the impact of regulation and the future of partnerships between big companies and start-ups with its implicit challenges and lessons learned.

According to Francesca Wuttke,

Medical dermatology is a representative example of the potential of patient centric digital health. The Digital Garden, powered by Almirall can be seen as a case study of both the recent and rapid development in this space and the huge potential of this new digital revolution in medicine.
